Analysis
The article introduces a new trend of conservatism. After the conservatism built by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher was demolished, Donald Trump, Viktor Orban, and diverse Western politicians established an “anti-woke” conservatism that prioritizes national sovereignty over individuals. This type of movement is growing on a global scale.
This ideology is not similar to the former one. National conservatism favors the state, hates globalism, and despises pluralism. It also distrusts the free market and hates migration and wokeness. Supporters view that the West is close to its downfall and oppose classical liberalism.
Some view that this trend will fall due to its incoherence: Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s prime minister, supports Ukraine; Mr Orban likes Russia; The Polish Law and Justice party (PiS) is anti-gay; in France Marine Le Pen is permissive. The fall in trade also threatens support for nationalism. Economic difficulties curtail civil rights and make people want liberalism.
However, the article disagrees. Whatever drowsy things happen to them, national conservatists will blame globalists and immigrants and complain. They use this uniting spirit to make common enemies. Nine months before the election, Trump is undermining NATO.
They do, in fact, have political power. Trump is leading his country; the far right is predicted to do well in European parliamentary elections in June; the German hard-right Alternative hit a record high of 23% in polls; pro-Brexit and anti-migration Tories are plotting to take over the party; Ms Le Pen could be the president of France in 2027.
These people can gain power by capturing state institutions, including courts, universities, and the independent press. Mr Orban’s Fidesz party did this in Hungary. Trump was verbal about it. The center-right used to control them, but they struggle now.
A solution that old-style conservatives and classic liberals can take is to listen to the concerns of people. Many oppose the idea of immigration for fear that they will gain too much power within the country. They think institutions and the press are controlled by left-leaning elites. They think globalists are arrogant people with undue power. Illegal immigration should be halted for easier legal migration. Restrictive planning should be avoided for young people to be included in the housing market. Top institutions should embody liberal principles instead of promoting censorship and groupthink.
Liberals should understand the issues that the people on other sides of the political spectrum give. There should also be a self-critique that people on the left are sometimes illiberal. There needs to be more defense for free speech and individual rights. It’s unnecessary to hate patriotism; loving one’s country is a valid value.
Liberalism is adaptable. The abolitionist and feminist movements broke the idea that some people are better than others. Socialism opened fairness, human dignity, and the welfare state. Libertarian arguments allow freer markets and a smaller state. It can also adapt to national conservatism, but right now, it needs work.
