Summary
After a student-led protest overthrew Bangladesh’s autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina, a caretaker government by a microfinance pioneer and Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken place. The Bangladeshi economy is no longer in free fall, but still requires care.
Ironically, the government is unconstitutional, due to the legal changes the authoritarian government made. It relies on authority and popularity. The country is going through inflation. The main electricity provider is ceasing production, due to missed payments. Flooding disturbed rice production.
Mr Yunus is pressured to make changes such as breaking apart the Awami League (AL), which is Sheikh Hasina’s party. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is pressuring a quick election, seeking protests if not soon.
The tolerant approach to AL may bring out further protests, which puts security at risk. A lot of Hindues have already been attacked by the Muslim majority.
Yunus also needs to time to make judicial reforms for a fair election. If the BNP takes power prematurely, it could just continue the vicious cycle of parties holding power unjustly.
While other countries are busy, they could help Bangladesh economically. They are already given a packet worth billions, but they may need more. If the West and India refuse, they could borrow from China.
For the benefit of the country, Yunus should schedule elections and explain that the delay was necessary for democratic changes. The revolution would only be successful is Yunus governs well and hands over the power well.
