About the Motion
Hello there! I’m back with another debate video. I really simplified the motion in the blog title. The full motion is:
This house prefers a world where the conception of an after-life is centered around divine grace, as opposed to karmic balance.
INFO SLIDE: Karmic balance refers to the view that individuals who behave in a blameworthy manner will face punishment and suffering, and those who behave in a praiseworthy manner will lead eternally happy lives in the afterlife. Divine grace refers to the view that irrespective of the morality of their actions, individuals will be forgiven and access eternally happy lives in the afterlife.
Let’s break it down
First, we can see it is a THP (This House Prefers) motion. This means proposition would argue that a world where the motion explains is preferable, providing metrics to why it should be preferred. Opposition would explain why the converse is preferable. An important characteristic of the motion type is that on each side, is it assumed that their world has been true since the start of time, meaning that both sides cannot discuss problems caused by transitions between worlds.
The motion is about divine grace, which is guaranteed eternal happiness after death. Karmic balance, on the other hand, is the belief that moral people get happiness and immoral people get punishment.
The debate is about the preference of the conception, so both sides talk about whether the action of perceiving what is true or not is better, not the notions themselves.
This debate was done in WSDC style, meaning there are two teams (prop and opp) and speeches are 8 minutes each. We did not have replies this round. I spoke as the Government Whip. The prep time for this debate was 30 minutes, and no research was allowed. Sides are decided randomly, and does not reflect the views of me as a person.

I divided the structure into three parts
- Two clashes of this debate
- Our points that were not responded
- Weighing of metrics
This was a great round to be a whip! Prop mainly argued for how perception of eternal happiness is great in a utilitarian perspective. Opp mainly argued that being moral is important. It was a great debate to weigh the metrics at the end of the speech, to give an extra reason why we won.
Overall, I think I had a clear structure, with strong rebuttals that are not too repetitive, nice weighing, and re-emphasis of our non-responded points.
One point I could have improved on is explaining why people may perceive that the karmic balance favors rich people. It was a bold claim, so I could have spent more time explaining that.
